Last Day

Today was our last day at St. Mary's, I was in the Pre-K phys ed. group. We had a rare day, we learned a song by Beyonce for the "Just Move" movement, my group learned the beginning of the song and we performed it for the gym group's kids and we had a blast. After that the Pre-K kids came in and we did parachute games, it was fun but the kids just wanted to run underneath it so it was difficult to play any games. After that we performed the dance again and it was a blast, granted not all of the kids listened but we had a really fun time doing it. It was an exciting event to end on. I learned a lot and enjoyed being with the kids a lot.

Time For Easter!!!

This week was lab 5, it was our easter theme. My group was doing special projects, now for those who don't know what that means, we were in charge of an activity at the end of the day that includes all kids left, a song for the kids, and then we do a cheer. I was in charge of the game this week, I set up an obstacle course in the shape of a square, it had four things to perform, jumping through hoops, leaping through hoops, climbing under and over ropes and then crawling through a bunny hole (mats folded up). It was a hit, we had music going on in the background and the kids were loving it, they were laughing and smiling the whole time. We then did the bunny hop song and had a happy easter cheer, it ended up being a great ending to a very successful day for everyone. I felt very accomplished with how the kids listened to me and responded to my game.

St. Mary's Lab 4

Today we went to St. Mary's for the fourth time, we had a dinosaur train theme. It's based off of a PBS kids television show. I was in the Pre-K room today, we had a craft for the kids which was them coloring in a picture of a dinosaur and putting it onto a poster board, the kids loved it. Next I had a song for them to sing and that went great. Next we read them a book and went into the gym for our games. We had a tag game and two other games, one involved throwing soft toys over a high mat which worked out great and the other was a little bit too difficult for the kids. We realized next time that we need more running games to get them tired out more. It ended up being a productive Lab, I really enjoyed the Pre-K kids today.

St. Mary's Lab 3

Yesterday, we met with the gym group again at St. Mary's, this is the age group of Kindergarten, First grade and  Second Grade. We had a western theme for the lab so everyone was dressed up in cow bow hats and straw hats. All of our games were based towards the theme, I went fourth in our group and I played cross the river, its a game based of the computer game Oregon trail, each kid used a floor hockey stick as a "horse" and tried to get past the River Monster. I felt that the game went extremely well and I felt very confident in it and being able to control the kids with directions. At the end I tried to play a game on the spot and I ran into the trouble of naming it wrong and the kids decided to take me literally and I was not able to get the kids to perform the game correctly, it was fun trying but I wish i had been able to get it too work.

St. Mary's Day 3, Lab 2

This week at St. Mary's, I was in the gym group, which means that I was teaching the K-1 kids. This week was much different for me, I had the opening activity and needless to say I didn't do very well in the beginning. The kids were just very excited and were struggling to sit there and listen to me. I learned that it's easier to start basic and work your way into adding new things into the game as we go along compared to just giving it to them all at once. The game ended up going very well but it took some time getting there. This week was a very big learning week for me.

St. Mary's Day 2

Today at St. Mary's, the hopscotch hero's were with the cafeteria group, at first we got their an watched a group go then we went down into the cafeteria. Down there we played and hung out with the kids, after that, we went into the gym. I had the group play the game called "SWAT", it went extremely well, I was really happy with the results, all of the kids who participated seemed like they were having a great time and I was really excited to see that. Next we played a couple other games with our group and then we went around playing different activities with the kids. It was a very exciting day finally getting the chance to teach the kids a game, and be able to be active with them throughout it.

Ch. 1 Summaries

Fundamental skill development is so important to our profession because without the gradual growth and improvement in locomotor skills, we would never be able to accomplish anything more than just simple pre-school level things. It helps us improve what we can do for students on the fact that we will be able to do more difficult things that will allow us to teach them more difficult things and introduce them into things that will challenge them. Having things challenge them will allow us to increase their health, confidence, and it will then create healthier people for the future. The reason why we assess them is to be able to help them improve in the areas where they are struggling or doing incorrectly, making them aware of things they could do better will improve there skills in the future and make them better students and athletes. Skill development for students is extremely important in there ability to grow and adapt to the challenges they may face.

Pre-lab 1

Today the T.A's had us go through tag games and different types of games that we could use with not many supplies or tools. We were in the gym for about 45 minutes and then we went down into the classroom to get into our groups for St. Mary's. My group is called the Hopscotch Hero's and we are working with the cafeteria group during our first lab.
